Humboldt was at once an explorer, ethnographer, geographer, geologist, botanist, and volcanologist. During his five-year expedition through South America, he traveled more than 10,000 kilometers alongside French botanist Aimé Bonpland – and devoted himself with particular passion to Ecuador.

Humboldt’s “Avenue of Volcanoes”

Fascinated by the power and beauty of nature, Humboldt coined the term “Avenida de los Volcanes” – Avenue of Volcanoes for the inter-Andean valley where 44 volcanoes rise in a majestic chain. His observations on geology, flora, and climate laid the foundations for numerous scientific discoveries, including the Humboldt Current, which still bears his name today.
