“Ecuadorians are strange and unique beings: they sleep peacefully at the foot of rumbling volcanoes, they live in poverty amid immeasurable riches, and they delight in sad music.”
With these words, Alexander von Humboldt described a country that captivated him deeply.

Born on September 14, 1769, the naturalist is still regarded as one of the most influential scientists of his era. Humboldt was at once an explorer, ethnographer, geographer, geologist, botanist, and volcanologist. During his five-year expedition through South America, he traveled more than 10,000 kilometers alongside French botanist Aimé Bonpland – and devoted himself with particular passion to Ecuador.

Humboldt’s “Avenue of Volcanoes”

Fascinated by the power and beauty of nature, Humboldt coined the term “Avenida de los Volcanes” – Avenue of Volcanoes for the inter-Andean valley where 44 volcanoes rise in a majestic chain. His observations on geology, flora, and climate laid the foundations for numerous scientific discoveries, including the Humboldt Current, which still bears his name today.

Humboldt’s spirit of discovery and his enthusiasm for nature and people continue to shape the fascination Ecuador inspires in travelers to this day.

Why Ecuador Still Inspires

Ecuador is considered one of the safest countries in South America and is an ideal destination for those setting foot on the continent for the first time. Despite its relatively small size, it ranks among the most biodiverse countries in the world.

  • Culture & History: Wander through the colonial old towns of Quito and Cuenca – both UNESCO World Heritage Sites – and immerse yourself in the traditions of colorful Andean markets.
  • Nature & Landscapes: Majestic volcanoes, lush rainforest, and breathtaking valleys create a paradise for nature lovers.
  • Wildlife: From condors soaring above the Andes to exotic creatures of the rainforest, Ecuador reveals an unparalleled variety of life.

And to crown your journey, the Galápagos Islands await – one of the last unspoiled natural paradises on earth. Giant tortoises, iguanas, and playful sea lions make a visit here an experience you’ll never forget.
