Women in tourism: more than just hosts

Tourism is one of the world’s largest industries – it connects cultures, creates jobs, and facilitates the exchange of knowledge and traditions. Yet, what is often overlooked: women are the backbone of this sector.

Did you know that over 50% of tourism employees worldwide are women? Despite this, they are often in lower-paid or precarious jobs and remain underrepresented in leadership positions. At the same time, it is women who, through their hospitality, knowledge, and passion, create unforgettable travel experiences.

Women play a key role in many areas of tourism – whether as hotel staff, tour guides, artisans, or entrepreneurs – yet challenges persist. Gender pay gaps remain, many women work in seasonal or informal jobs, and in some countries, access to financial resources for women is still limited.

That is why sustainable and fair tourism must actively contribute to empowering women and fostering their economic independence.

Women who inspire – encounters on our journeys

At Planet B, we place great value on authentic encounters with local communities. Time and again, we meet strong, inspiring women who make a difference with their knowledge, creativity, and dedication.

In Ghana, we visit women’s cooperatives that sustain their livelihoods through fair trade cocoa and shea butter production. These cooperatives enable women to earn their own income, improve educational opportunities for their children, and promote sustainable agriculture.

In Mexico, we discover handmade crafts created by women who preserve and pass on traditional weaving techniques and ceramics – a valuable cultural heritage supported by sustainable tourism.

In India, we meet teachers who advocate for girls’ education. In many regions, education for girls is not a given, but dedicated women work tirelessly to create opportunities for learning and a brighter future.

Tourism as an opportunity for women – why conscious travel choices matter

Tourism can be more than just relaxation and adventure – it can be a platform for economic independence and gender equality. The way we travel, the accommodations we choose, and the businesses we support have a direct impact on local communities.

What can you do to support women through conscious travel?

  • Travel fairly – Choose accommodations and restaurants that are women-led or actively employ women in key roles.
  • Support local craftsmanship – Buying handmade products directly from female artisans helps preserve their work and cultural heritage.
  • Travel mindfully – Engage with local communities, learn from inspiring women, and make travel decisions that promote gender equality.

Gender equality has no expiration date – it matters 365 days a year

International Women’s Day on March 8th reminds us of the achievements, challenges, and countless stories of women around the world. But gender equality should not be a topic of discussion for just one day – it is something that matters every single day.
