Experience Ghana – A Journey that Connects. Encounters, Impressions and Empowerment.
“You only truly understand the world when you encounter it.”
This thought perfectly captures the intensity and emotion experienced by the participants of the study trip to Ghana, organised by Planet B Travel for Fairtrade Lëtzebuerg.
The trip was deliberately designed to give participants direct insight into the people and structures behind Fairtrade value creation. It was a journey focused not on sightseeing, but on encounters, openness and mutual understanding – moments that will leave a lasting impact.
At the heart of the programme was a visit to the Fairtrade cocoa cooperative Kuapa Kokoo. Guests discovered the depth of work, knowledge and commitment behind every cocoa bean, as well as the essential role of fair prices, safe working conditions and long-term partnerships for producers. The conversations, shared laughter and warm hospitality made Fairtrade both tangible and deeply personal.
The effects of climate change were also a significant topic. Local farmers spoke about shifting rainy seasons, extreme rainfall followed by periods of drought – challenges that increasingly affect their harvests and livelihoods. Fairtrade structures offer crucial stability in this context.
A particularly touching moment was the distribution of 150 small cartons of Fair Mëllech chocolate milk to children in the community – a thoughtful gesture that made the connection between Ghana and Luxembourg visible. Since 2016, cocoa from Kuapa Kokoo has been used in Luxembourg’s Fair Mëllech chocolate milk, produced by Fairkoperativ, a community of committed farmers dedicated to fair agriculture.
Supporting Local Women – A Personal Contribution
Another key aim of the trip was the empowerment of women in local communities.
As part of the journey, a direct contribution was made: 1,100 USD was provided to enable a woman from the region to access training or further education through the WSOL (Women Support Organisation for Life) programme. This amount came from the 1% solidarity contribution included in the trip price. WSOL is among the most impactful women’s empowerment programmes in West Africa, and the encounters with these inspiring women deeply moved the group.
More Than Just a Trip
This journey demonstrated the power of personal encounters:
– how closeness can grow where there was once distance,
– how understanding can develop where previously there was only a product,
– how responsibility becomes real when you meet the people behind a supply chain.
Planet B Travel extends heartfelt thanks to Fairtrade Lëtzebuerg for their trust, and to all participants for their openness and curiosity.
Ghana inspired, enriched and left a lasting mark – an experience that will undoubtedly continue to resonate.
