Sustainable overnight stay
“The world is changed by your example, not by your opinion.” ― Paulo Coelho
When we talk about sustainability in hotel accommodation, we often focus on ecological aspects and the use of resources: well-thought-out energy concepts, saving water, and reducing waste.
As customers, we have already realized that changing towels or even bed linen every day is unnecessary. This also applies to hygiene products individually wrapped in plastic in the bathroom or the coffee capsule machine in the hotel room, perhaps even to the energy-intensive minibar.
However, sustainability is also about social responsibility towards nature, people, and animals.
Environmental Integration and Cultural Preservation
Does a hotel visually fit into the surrounding landscape? Is it built using traditional methods and regional materials? Is the local fauna and flora considered and protected during planning? Can historic buildings be saved from destruction and given a new function? Are natural materials primarily used in the room furnishings? Are local craftsmen hired?
Sustainable Cuisine
How is the hotel catering organized? Regional and seasonal products are prioritized, and organic or fair-trade products are also used. The steak comes from sustainable farming, the breakfast egg from the neighbouring farmer, and the jam perhaps from fruit from the hotel’s own garden.
Social Responsibility
Employees play a crucial role in sustainably operating hotels: fair pay, fair treatment, appreciation, and opportunities for further training are important criteria. Additionally, hoteliers ensure a variety of employment opportunities, leading to higher regional income and enhanced social status.
Economic and Community Impact
When we choose a sustainable hotel, we don’t just choose comfort, tasteful furnishings, and regional cuisine. We choose authenticity, a family atmosphere, and the economic strengthening of the holiday region. Sustainable hotels contribute to the local economy by sourcing locally and providing jobs, thereby supporting community development.
Conclusion
By opting for sustainable accommodations, we lead by example, making conscious choices that positively impact the environment and society. Our travel experiences become richer and more meaningful, fostering a deeper connection with the places we visit and the people we meet. Let’s embrace sustainable travel for a better world.
